The Mercedes-Benz EQS luxury sedan is the first Mercedes-Benz model to be built on the company’s new modular architecture for luxury and executive-class electric vehicles. 

Combustion Predecessors


The all-new 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS deviates from the traditional appearance of its combustion predecessors, having been engineered as a ‘purpose design’ where the function is prioritized. The four-door EQS is softer, more rounded (and possibly more futuristic) than any Mercedes. It is sculpted without the need for traditional engine cooling. The engineering team’s attention to aerodynamics resulted in a new industry standard. Range estimates for both are around 350 miles, which is comparable to the range of most current combustion-powered Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and the vehicle will charge overnight on a home Level 2 charger. (On the road, owners will be able to use a DC fast charger to charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about 35 minutes.)

Single Electric Motor


The 450+ is a single electric motor and it will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds. It takes about 4.1 seconds for the 580 4MATIC. (An even faster performance-tuned AMG model is on the way.)

Air Dampers and Advanced Steering System


Mercedes-Benz equips all EQS models with independent suspension and adaptive air dampers (AIRMATIC). A standard rear-axle steering system, which can turn the rear wheels up to 10 degrees in either direction, improves vehicle stability at high speeds, and eases maneuvering in parking lots – rear-axle steering makes a noticeable difference in nearly every driving dynamic. The materials are fit-and-finish, and passenger amenities are all first-rate – the EQS is hands-down the most luxurious pure-EV. 

Premium models come with pillowed head restraints, heated, cooled, and massaging front seats (an available Executive Package offers the same amenities for those in the back seats). There are premium sound options and accent lighting in a rainbow of illuminated colors – the passenger cabin is visually appealing.

Rear Axle Steering


The EQS rides superbly, thanks in part to a 5,900-pound curb weight that acts as a tuned mass damper, reducing unwanted movements and vibrations as the Mercedes glides down the road. The ride is well-controlled and the airmatic offers drive modes so the ride may be tuned to the road conditions. When pushed into the corners, the EQS maintains its poise far beyond the point. The rear-axle steering improves the riding and functionalities.

Front-seat passengers will find the accommodations to be spacious and comfortable. The front seats cradle occupants with La-Z-Boy comfort and are adjustable to accommodate people of all sizes. There is also plenty of head and legroom. It’s worth noting that the rear seats are raised a few inches higher than the front seats – most likely due to battery packaging – and legroom isn’t as generous. The seatback design requires them to fold forward (one small compromise for the hatchback body style that greatly increases utility). The Hyperscreen from Mercedes is undeniably impressive, but it is also intimidating. Traditional buttons are gone, replaced by a massive touchscreen.



In terms of physical propulsion, today a stronger motor (or motors) delivers more rapid, seamless acceleration – but differs in the operator interaction with the machine and the physical ride. Mercedes-Benz has doubled down on technology and innovation with the EQS.


The Hyperscreen is a few inches taller than a traditional instrument cluster, slightly restricting the driver’s view out the front windshield when compared to the average vehicle. The EQS compensates with a massive head-up display on the front glass that not only projects basic information (e.g., speed and road signs) and safety alerts. It also adds an Augmented Reality Navigation System – it projects arrows on specific parts of the glass to show the primary instrument cluster displays operating and vehicle information at the same time.


The electric motors’ instant torque makes acceleration effortless. On that note, the 580 pulls especially hard (most sports cars can’t keep up) and without drama. Both vehicles are also whisper-quiet at high speeds, thanks to their exceptional aerodynamics.



The warranty period is four years.

Electrical accessories are warranted for a period of eight years or 143,000 miles.
